OCR (optical character recognition) reads the text in a scanned page or photo so you can search, copy and edit it. If your office still receives paper — signed forms, receipts, old archives — OCR is what turns that pile into documents you can actually find later.
Dedicated OCR suites focus on accuracy, languages and batch processing of whole folders. Many PDF editors also include OCR; it is often good enough for clean scans of typed text. We mark which plan includes OCR, because it is frequently reserved for the more expensive tier.

Scans often contain personal data. Desktop OCR processes files on your own computer.
Not always. Many PDF editors include OCR that handles clean, typed scans well. Dedicated OCR software is worth it for large volumes, poor-quality scans, many languages or complex tables.
A PDF that still shows the original scan but has a hidden text layer underneath, so you can search, select and copy the words.
Some tools recognise neat handwriting, but results are far less reliable than with printed text. Treat it as a bonus, not a reason to buy.
For an occasional single page, often yes. Free online OCR usually limits pages or file size, and uploads the scan to a server.
