A PDF editor is the tool you reach for when a file is already a PDF and something in it is wrong: a typo in a contract, a logo that needs replacing, a page that belongs in another document. Readers and browsers can only annotate; editors change the underlying content.
The market splits into three groups. Desktop suites (subscription or one-time licence) handle long, scanned or form-heavy documents and keep working offline. Mac-first editors trade breadth for a lighter, faster interface. Browser editors cost less and need no install, but most cap file size or daily tasks on their free tiers.

Scores are DocPicker's editorial ratings, calculated the same way for every product — see how we review. "Starting price" is the lowest published subscription price per month; one-time licences are shown separately. Nothing on this page is paid placement.
Several desktop editors still sell perpetual licences. Over three years a one-time licence is usually cheaper for a single user, but upgrades to the next major version cost extra.
Editing a scanned page needs OCR to turn the image into text. Some vendors only include OCR in their higher tier.
True redaction removes the text from the file. If you share legal, HR or medical documents, make sure the plan you buy lists redaction.
If you switch between a Windows PC at work and a Mac or iPad at home, confirm the licence covers both — many are per platform.
A reader opens, prints and annotates PDFs (highlights, comments, sticky notes). An editor changes the content itself: it rewrites text, swaps images, reorders and deletes pages, and usually exports to Word or Excel.
For light changes, yes. Several online tools on DocPicker have free tiers that let you add text, rearrange pages or fill forms, usually with a daily task or file-size limit. Rewriting existing paragraphs reliably generally needs a paid editor.
A web app is fine for occasional edits to non-sensitive files. Choose a desktop editor if you handle large or scanned documents, need to work offline, or are not allowed to upload client files to a third-party server.
Use the Mac filter on this page. Every platform listed on DocPicker was confirmed on the vendor's own site on the verified date shown on each product page.
